MUTECAST #033 Christian Loffler

You might know Christian Löffler from his excellent Boiler Room appearance a few months back. Or maybe because of his critically acclaimed and all round stunning album ‘A Forest’, released on his own label: Ki records. (TAL104) Brando Lupi

Italian techno is well renowned for its great quality among electronic music aficionados. Thanks to its numerous assets, which include famous artists such as Donato Dozzy, Giorgio Gigli, Claudio PRC and so many others, this scene keeps being talked about all around Europe and beyond…And Brando Lupi is also clearly part of this group of talented Italian producers. While still little known to the public, this mysterious artist has yet been around the scene for over a decade, working partly as a techno producer and partly as a photographer. He also runs the Detune Records structure, that he created in 2000 to release his own techno productions. Close to the Prologue aesthetic, Brando’s music has …

Extrawelt “Neuland (Robag Wruhme Rekksmow 001)”

Extrawelt “Neuland (Robag Wruhme Rekksmow 001)”

Next week, the Darkroom Dubs label will drop Darkroom Dubs Vol. 3, a mix CD compiled and pieced together by the label heads in Silicone Soul, partly to celebrate 10 years as an active imprint. Pulled from the mix is this Robag Wruhme rework of Extrawelt‘s “Neuland”—the original of which appeared on Darkroom Dubs back in 2010. The veteran producer/jock takes Extrawelt’s tune into territory that is somehow both more melodic and tribal (as he is wont to do), resulting in a piece of techno that is spellbindingly immersive. The complete Darkroom Dubs Vol. 3 mix will see a release on February 25.

Born and raised in Lille, France, Benales has been honing his craft since the end of the 90s. RA.338 Apollonia

RA.338 Apollonia

Published / 19 November 2012 Filesize / 103.58 MB Length / 01:25:55 Dyed, Dan and Shonky. Apollonia is a label and DJ collective comprising Dyed Soundorom, Dan Ghenacia and Shonky. Rising from the ashes of Ghenacia’s Freak n’ Chic at the beginning of 2012, the trio endeavoured to build a platform for their shared musical vision—something Soundorom articulated as “a mix of white soul and black music” earlier this year. What that usually means for the dance floor is house music with a focus on groove, with an equal amount of emphasis placed on the past and the present. DC-10 in Ibiza has been a stronghold for their sound this past summer. …

RA.337 Phase

Published / 12 November 2012 Filesize / 81.69 MB Length / 01:07:50 Undiluted techno from an under-appreciated name. Ashley Burchett is a London producer whose work has featured in the bags of full-throttled techno DJs since 2000. Those who checked our recent Label of the Month feature on Belgian label Token will know that Burchett came on board with the imprint in 2007 and has made it his exclusive home ever since. Burchett has largely pushed a fast-paced, rolling sound, one that often evokes the more shadowy corners of Jeff Mills’ Purpose Maker series. Token marked its fifth birthday at the start of 2012 with Burchett’s relentless Binary Opposition, a release that would …

Background Techno Experience 286 – Piemont

Background Techno Experience 286 – Piemont

Frederic Möring-Sack and Christian Jonquieres have been releasing music under a number of guises on their own labels, Suchtreflex and Plumbum since 2007. Their work as Piemont, has won them a huge fanbase, headed by many of the DJ world’s leading lights With a musical background that has encompassed Hip-Hop and song composition, via Skate-Punk and Metal. It is quite a surprise to experience the deep and often dulcet tones of Piemont’s modern productions. Their beat ridden tracks do include a certain kind of magic in terms of abstract funkiness and soul which has been growing on people ever after they have listened to their tracks for the first time. …

XLR8R Podcast 270: Cajmere

XLR8R Podcast 270: Cajmere

Chicago’s history is full of house-music legends and innovators, but few figures loom larger than Cajmere (a.k.a. Curtis Jones). While he’s perhaps better known these days as Green Velvet, Jones first made his mark as Cajmere, heading up the influential Cajual label and dropping a slew of influential tunes, most notably “The Percolator,” which remains a classic floor-filler to this day. Yet the quality Cajual releases didn’t stop there, and now, more than two decades after the imprint’s founding, the Strut crew has stepped in to commission Only 4 U: The Sound Of Cajmere And Cajual Records 1992 – 2012. The two-disc collection features some of the finest gems from the Cajual catalog, some of which also appear …

Sinner DC – Mental Groove [GTC187]

Sinner DC – Mental Groove [GTC187]

This week’s podcast is bought to you by Swiss trio Sinner DC, hot off the heels of their new album released on Mental Groove. A perfect match for fall weather, it’s an album where synths, guitars, vocals and drum machines are used with flair to craft heartfelt tracks, cold and spacy but not without a sensitivity which I’m going to call ‘alpine’. Halfway between The Field’s and Gas’ vibe on the one hand and the songwriting of Sonic Boom or even an early M83 on the other, this is music to listen to on the top of a glacier. This podcast showcases Sinner DC’s interpretation of the dancefloor: trippy and melodic, …

EG.339 Oliver Huntemann

Location: Hamburg, Germany Format: Studio Duration: 60 min Size: 83 MB Myths abound in the north when it comes to techno ground zero, and they refuse to go away. Oliver Huntemann is one of a handful of children of the north who, for what seems like an eternity, add an element of credence to the mythology. He does not, of course, live in a snowy forest or at the edge of the polar oceans. The sun does, on occasion, shine down on Hamburg. Nevertheless, there is a tendency towards hypothermic reduction in the rigorous efficiency of the Huntemann oeuvre. Images of cold storage warehouses, desolate heavy plant sites and bluish …

Chet Faker – Terms And Conditions (Nicolas Jaar Remix)

Master of sonic space Nicolas Jaar just dragged Blackstreet-covering crooner Chet Faker into his isolated, emotive world on this remix of “Terms And Conditions.” It’s all metallic circularity – a house of mirrors rotating in expanding directions before breaking into a house beat with submarine bass, Faker’s pitched-to-depths voice trying to climb to the surface.
