Definition of Travel at Dictionary.com

Origin of travel

1325–75; Middle English (north and Scots), orig. the same word as travail (by shift “to toil, labor” > “to make a laborious journey”)

usage note for travel

The word travel has come to exemplify a common spelling quandary: to double or not to double the final consonant of a verb before adding the ending that forms the past tense ( –ed ) or the ending that forms the present-participle ( –ing. ) We see it done both ways—sometimes with the same word ( travel, traveled, traveling; travel, travelled, travelling ). With the Hollywood sign gleaming under a Californian sun, and open-topped supercars cruising down Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles is the most aspirational city on the planet. Many who come to LA pack little more than dreams and a modeling portfolio or a hastily-scrawled script. This is a place to live life in the fast lane, partying hard at exclusive parties, before detoxing with the latest macrobiotic fad. But it has that laid-back Californian spirit too, with a stretch of surf-ready beaches.

Things to see

When you first catch sight of the giant letters high in the hills, it’s a surreal experience. Seeing the Hollywood Sign in the flesh is a surreal experience, but it is confirmation that you have arrived in the city of dreams. Once you’ve snapped some pictures, you can get even more star-struck on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which stretches for 15 blocks

Can you travel in California? Official signals conflict

Californians, are you now free to move about the state?

It seems you are, if you judge by the flurry of hotel, casino and park openings in California, Las Vegas and the rest of the West in recent days, including a big burst of reopenings Friday with Disneyland to follow on July 17.

At popular destinations like Santa Barbara, Napa Valley and Los Angeles, tourism boosters are eagerly inviting the masses back and treating the state’s stay-at-home order as history.

But that’s not what public health officials are saying, at least not yet.

“We are waiting to see how the State Health Officer changes her order,” wrote a spokesman for Los Angeles County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer in an email Thursday.

As of Friday morning, that change hadn’t come yet, and the state Public Health Office was giving this advice on the state website:

“You can travel for
