Description
Del JardÃn Latino: -We usually write a short review on the podcast of the week, in this case, since we are also interviewing you, we will leave that up to you, what can you tell us about the mix?
Axel Bartsch: -The mix is cut out of a 3 hours set I did at Arena Club Berlin at the beginning of November. I always try to build up a session, starting with an intro or a very stripped down track and building it up from there on, taking the audience on a little journey. I don´t like DJ sets which are always at the same level but it has to be a flow. Shortest time for this is a 2 hours set, best is if you have 5 hours or more. You can break it down and rebuild it and that’s when people get really hooked, keep it in mind and dj, music and the crowd become one like partners in crime. Love that!
The hour you can listen to is about the middle part of the 3 hours set. It´s always depending where and when you play. Sometimes I keep playing more of the housy, deep stuff, sometimes I have to start a little more energetic.
DJL: -You have been involved in the Berlin scene from the mid 90s, summing it up, what do you think those hinge, key or change-generating events were?
AB: -I can´t tell if there were the key events, it was more or less a growing process with ups and downs like everything in life. Of course there were the pioneers, doing the first illegal partys in empty buildings, the first raves, then the first clubs like Tresor, Planet, Waalfisch etc, Loveparade, Fuckparade… I would say that the fall of the Berlin Wall was the most important event. It released room and energy for Techno. Since then Berlin became the capital city of Techno world wide. But it needed all the freedom people brought with the german reunion. Like nobody knew what was legal or illegal at the beginning of the `90s, empty space for partys, people hungry for new music, ready to release and all the promoters, Djs and Artist living and pushing the Techno life since then. There is no other city where you can technicly party 24/7 and I talk about going to official partys and clubs not private afterhours because clubs have to close at 5 in the morning. That´s something people love about Berlin. Time gets lost here.
DJL: -Many labels are not editing in vinyl anymore, what is your stance on it?
AB: -I can understand this. Vinyl sales went down and down and they are at a point now where it´s almost stupid to to it. It´s promotion and without vinyl your music gets easyly lost in the djungel of digital releases. With a digital release you can save a lot of production cost but at the end the labels which do vinyl have the most digital sales.
I was an oldschool vinyl DJ until the beginning of 2008. But I received only digital promos and after a while I found myself playing CDs only. Since then I have been working with Traktor cause I wanted to stick with the vinyl touch. I kept going to the record store to search for stuff that I haven´t received as promo but it took me 2-3 hours to go there and listen to the releases and then ending up buying 2 or 3 copies. After a while I was sick of it and I started buying missing tracks online. I feel kind of bad cause I love vinyl and I don´t support it anymore though I want to sell it. It´s a weird situation at the moment and I hope that vinyl will survive.
DJL: -What are your upcoming releases?
AB: -Next will be a release on Sportclub at the 18th Jan 2010: Axel Bartsch feat Jake The Rapper – Blam and Flow – Sportclub 22, including a massive Thomas Schumacher Remix. Jake The Rapper is an artist from the USA living in Berlin since 12 years and he´s doing the vocals on the tracks. About the same time there will be a variuos artist release on Get Physical with a track of mine called “Gude Laune†(good mood) I also used in the mix. Then it´s a release on Baalsaal Records, which I am really looking forward to, main track is “Daight†and they are working on a remix at the moment. So, some stuff is coming up after a lazy 2009 concerning releases
DJL: -What are the future plans of your label, Sportclub Music?
AB: -I will definitly continue the work with Sportclub cause it´s great to have everything in your hands. We are working more professional now with the help of my girlfriend and label manager Lauren. But we will only release Vinyl if we stand 100% behind the product. I would also like to bring some friends in as I did with the Sportclub 21 by Oddvar to get get some different vibes and variation besides the usual suspects.
