Description
This week’s podcast features Californian techno warrior Drumcell (Moe Espinosa). One of the founders of the infamous Droid organization, his needles-in-the red beats and minimalistic funk of techno pedigree released on Droid, CLR and Drumcode amongst others have earned him gigs across the world and support from heavy weights such as Speedy J, Richie Hawtin and Chris Liebing. Being a Product Specialist at Native Instruments means Moe’s live sets are at the cutting-edge end of the DJ performance spectrum: he uses Traktor, Ableton and Maschine over two laptops for very smooth and focused results.
To me, this is a special set because of the conditions in which it was performed, so it just might challenge your expectations of what a Drumcell set is. Let me explain: the mix was recorded in Detroit last May at the official Movement festival after party thrown by Chris Liebing’s CLR imprint. So it’s got a slight afterhours vibe to it, considering that it was played after a long day of techno under the Mid-West sun. Yet, this particular after party ran from 10pm from 5am. Perhaps this is why this set is deeper and more mental than usual for Drumcell, but that you can feel it gaining in the cojones department as it progresses. All of this makes for a fantastic ‘afterhours warehouse techno’ podcast.
