Not one for sitting still, Thomas Schumacher has spent the past 20 years in dance music constantly evolving his sound and reinventing his image. In that time he has continually surprised people with his new directions, uncovering hidden depths and unknown passions. Equally this HYBRIDLIFE podcast will no doubt surprise a few. However when you consider this is a guy who didn’t just grow up on a diet of early Belgian and German techno, but was also a big fan of the original Detroit sounds, as well as 90’s drum’n’bass, then you get an idea of why every few years he is able to uncover further layers to his repertoire.
At the turn of the millennium Thomas was well on his way to becoming a pop star. He had three singles that went into the German Top 15 and had he chosen to play ball he could have had all the associated fame and glory. However he turned his back on the pop charts and stayed true to his dance roots. Yet rather than returning to the ‘techno, techno’ scene he was known for, he released the outstanding ‘Home’ album on his own Spielzeug label, and then signed for Get Physical, who at that time were riding high as one of the hottest new labels on the planet. It was a trademark Schumacher switch that was performed with typical panache. First with Elektrochemie, and since 2007 on his own, Get Physical has proved to be a perfect home for Thomas Schumacher, allowing him the independence, support and environment to be the kind of underground artist his undoubted talent deserves.
