Location: Phoenix Landing, Boston 22.02.12
Format: Live
Duration: 81 min

Prepossessing the ability to effortlessly maneuver through the realms of house and techno, as dawn breaks over 2012 the many facets of Tim Green’s production dexterity is casting reflections in innumerable directions, illuminating a musical and thought-induced excursion on which the 27-year old is embarking.

Experimenting across the spectrum of electronic music, whether putting out reverberating minimal techno of Amnesia peak-time kind-of-measures, or sprinkling some of that unmistakeable TG charm over productions of popular appeal, his work is stamped by ingenuity, fearlessness and fun – which also granted him the ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ award at DJ Mag’s Best of British in 2010.

After fully bursting onto the scene in 2008 with modern classics ‘Revox’ and ‘Mr Dry’ snapped up by highly-revered Dirtybird and Trapez Records respectively, and picking up support from top players such as Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin and Luciano along the way, Tim swiftly catapulted himself into the upper echelons of the techno hierarchy. A string of high profile releases followed in short succession adding Cocoon, Get Physical, Saved & Four:Twenty to an already impressive back catalogue, as well as remixes for XL Records, Sci+Tec, Moshi Moshi and Souvenir.

With an idiosyncratic groove and off-kilter cheekiness his sound has seen him tour the electronic bastions of the world, including Space – Ibiza, Womb – Tokyo, Fabric – London, Sankeys – Manchester, Watergate – Berlin, D-edge – Sao Paulo, Electric Pickle – Miami, WHP – Manchester, Bestival – Isle Of White, SW4 Festival – London, Zouk – Singapore, Rex Club – Paris. As we are heading into 2012 Tim makes a welcomed return to his underground roots, captivating crowds in more intimate yet discerning settings, along with heading up his own night Bedlam, which is currently on everyone’s lips.

On the production side of things 2012 is already looking like another stella year with
with a dark and twisted remix of Sacha Robotti ft Qzen’s Fotograf on Klasse Recordings and, following on from last year’s ‘In Love EP’ on Get Physical, he has teamed up with Robert Dietz & Audiofly for a remix package due for release in April. This summer will see him return once more to Cocoon to release the outstanding ‘Curious Smile’, plus an EP for Get Physical and remixes for Supernature & Oh Yeah Records, as well as putting the finishing touches to his much anticipated debut artist album.

Taking into consideration the achievements Tim has reached in the span of merely four years, it is a gathered electronic community that awaits his next move, Where to next?

someone else is philadelphia’s sean o’neal, whose musical inspiration is already imbedded in his roots. his grandfather was a high school music teacher and also played bass with bill hailey and the comets. his father was also on the brink of success with various rock bands throughout the ’50s and ’60s. during his early youth, sean lived a cheeseball life performing in a variety of choirs and musical plays. also around this time, he would often sit with his father and grandfather watching and listening to spike jones — a comical bandleader from the ’40s and ’50s who would often make music by hitting random objects in the room. by his teenage years, sean was playing guitar and synthesizers in a variety of indie rock bands while being a huge fan of shoegazer rock and krautrock.

since 1994, he has been the force behind his ever-evolving, kitsch-driven electro-pop outfit, flowchart (much of it alongside erin anderson a.k.a. fidget) — releasing dozens and dozens of albums, singles, eps and comp tracks on different labels from all over the world (like darla, morr music, instinct, endorphin, carrot top, and his own fuzzy box imprint), and flowchart was chosen as one of the “next 100” according to urb magazine in 1998. around this time he also was hooked on idm, techno and house, and he had already fallen in love with artists such as the orb, plastikman, king tubby and matthew herbert. he became intrigued by herbert’s use of field recordings and found sounds, and this recalled a similar feeling to what he gained from the music of spike jones.

as his love for minimal techno solidified by 1998, sean teamed up with jay haze and bjoern hartmann, and together they launched the tuning spork label. while making dance music with field recordings became more and more his shtick, sean grew close to kate iwanowicz (a.k.a. miskate) and sylvain takerkart (a.k.a. fusiphorm), and together they launched the foundsound and unfoundsound record labels. to this day, both labels continue to gain increasingly more recognition while offering a unique facet to the modern-day minimal scene.

throughout the years, sean also co-produced events in philadelphia and new york — hosting performances by magda, matthew dear, sammy dee, geoff white, jeff milligan, dan bell, dinky and many others. he also spent a lot of time writing part-time as a journalist for various music magazines and newspapers such as xlr8r and philadelphia city paper.

over recent years, sean’s production skills have been garnering respect among internationally renowned djs and labels alike, as reflected by his massive discography of releases and remixes for labels like musik krause, tuning spork, foundsound, mo’s ferry, microcosm, nummer, kickboxer, sender, alphahouse, roman-photo, level non-zero, mule musiq, hello? repeat, revolver and many others. this was accompanied by extensive world touring, and he was voted as one of the best live acts of 2006 in groove magazine. sean continues to spin and play live all around north america, south america, europe, japan, russia and elsewhere — including fabric in london, yellow in tokyo, rex club in paris and panorama bar in berlin.

Next Saturday we hand over the keys of Room One to one of the last decade’s most important electronic labels, Get Physical, the imprint defined by DJ T. and his international roster including M.A.N.D.Y, Booka Shade and Audiofly to name drop a few. Providing the deep groove tech-house soundtrack to so many great nights, the imprint has continued to charm DJs’ record boxes and audiences worldwide and will do once more this Spring with the news of DJ T.’s third artist album, “Pleasure Principle.”

Following the success of DJ T.’s 2009 long player “The Inner Jukebox”, the new album, co-produced with the multi-talented Lopazz represents Thomas Koch’s decision to take a back seat from his former role in Get Physical Music management and concentrate on the quality of his sound as an artist. Guest appearances on the new album include instrumental tracks and collaborations with artists James Teej, dOP member Jaw and his girlfriend Ginger plus Dave Aju and the first single “Burning” remixed by Art Department & Redshape is a melodic slow house burner set for Summer loving.

As if all this fresh material wasn’t enough, DJ T. has sent our pulses racing with a brand new mix, cleverly charming our ears into a dream like state with its hypnotic house and catchy vocal samples. Have a listen and you’ll soon be dreaming of next Saturday’s Get Physical takeover… see you on the dancefloor.

Biography

Cassy (real name Catherine Britton) was born in Kingston Upon-Thames, England to a Caribbean father and an Austrian mother. She moved to Austria as a child and then back to England as a young adult, performing stints as a singer and actress.

While living in Austria, Cassy was exposed to a diverse, high-quality electronic music scene, which offered everything from trance and techno to the eclectic sounds of artists like Kruder and Dorfmeister. This exposure spawned Cassy’s passion for electronic music and eventually led her to begin a career as a DJ and producer.

In 2003, Cassy moved to Berlin and proceeded to build a reputation as a talented house and minimal DJ. Among other accomplishments, she secured a residency at Panoramabar and had the honor of mixing the first Panoramabar compilation.

She has collaborated with artists like Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, DJ Elin (aka Autorepeat), Dave the Hustler, Mathew Jonson, and Swayzak. Her tracks and remixes have been released on labels like M_nus, Playhouse, Get Physical, Perlon, Dessous, and Mental Groove.

She has also started the label “Cassy”, where she has currently released two records, to serve as a vehicle for releasing her own music. While Cassy has achieved much as an electronic music DJ and producer, her achievements alone do not reveal the depth of her artistry.

Cassy has a mystique that tends to captivate and intrigue the attentive listener or observer. When playing a set, she exudes an aura of serenity and passion for what she’s doing. Her mystique is due in part to her unique and diverse set of cultural and musical influences. She has lived in different countries and drawn inspiration from a wide array of musical sources.

One could argue that of all the electronic artists and labels that made their name in the decade just gone, it was the Get Physical collective and more importantly Booka Shade (Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger) and M.A.N.D.Y. (Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung) that made the most impression. Back in 2002 when the relatively unknown group of creative’s (including DJ T) decided to launch the label, dance music was in a sonic recession, but with a fresh sound and approach they very quickly pointed us all in a new direction. Between them the Get Physical crew brought sexy back and in turn created some of the finest dance music the world has ever heard, with M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade’s 2005 seminal single ‘Body Language’ ensuring legendary status for all involved.

Off the back of ‘Body Language’ M.A.N.D.Y. became the hugely in-demand globe-trotting DJ’s they still are and Booka Shade are now regarded as one of the finest live electronic acts in the world, having toured the globe numerous times over the past 5 years. Despite all this though, they’ve only ever released one other single together, their deliciously dazed, deeply hypnotic take on Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’. That is of course, until now.

In ‘Donut’, the world now has a third release to treasure. Once you’ve heard it, you will understand why. Like all the best records, it is both immediately recognisable (as the work of M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade), but quite unlike anything else out there. For instance, its chirruping restless rhythms, its deep lying strata of microscopic pops ‘n’ clicks is pure M.A.N.D.Y. An irresistible propulsive percussive energy is a hallmark of the duo’s DJ sets. Its Booka Shade’s melodies, however, their manipulation of dramatic tension, that transform this giddy, insistent groove into something with a darker, deeper emotional resonance.

Since arriving in London at the beginning of the new millennium, Italoboyz, aka Marco Donato and Federico Marton, have become an essential fixture of the capital’s small but passionate house/techno/minimal scene. From their notorious back-to-back DJ sets at FESH (333, London), their reputation has grown to the point where they can now be found playing regularly across the planet. However, it’s not just the energy and flair of their DJ sets that has captured the imagination, Italoboyz releases now on some of today’s most influential minimal-house / techno labels like Mothership and Get Physical, after starting to work in 2005/2006 with label like Treibstoff, Einmaleins Musik, Gumption and Safari Electronique.

“When you realize that without moving there won’t be any change, you move…” explains Marco, so that’s exactly what they did, swapping their native Italy for London (Marco in 2001 and Fede in 2002), urged on by separate desires to go deeper and get more involved in electronic music. It was this fusion of minds, with complementary ways of both absorbing and communicating electronic music that inspired them to team up and form Italoboyz in 2002. Since then they haven’t stopped moving forward, obsessively exploring the hybrid sounds of house and techno through their love of minimalism, acid-house and hi-tech funk.

Although their sound has always been characterized by organic elements along with large doses of funk and energy, the distinctive flavor of their productions and DJ sets is down to a willingness to embrace and explore the various genres and sub-genres that develop out of this constantly evolving music. One of the reasons Italoboyz productions are so well received is the fact that their musical expression is a fusion of sounds, themes and ideas resulting from over 15 years of music research and DJing experience. Their aim is to deliver the most modern, cutting edge sound possible but it should still resonate through time, both past and future, in order to make the immediate experience all the more seductive.

When they were throwing their own parties in 2003/2004 they built up quite a following, often running all day long from Sunday afternoon till early Monday morning. It’s an experience that has given them valuable knowledge and insight into the difference between playing in a ‘peak time’ club environment and a more laid back ‘after hour’ situation where the emphasis is on creating sonic landscapes that morph from easy-listening, atmospheric sounds to more dance orientated grooves.

In 2007 there was a surge of events: starting with the “Accendiamo l’ascensore” EP (feat. Rico Casazza and SozAdams aka MarcAshken) on Gumption Recordings in February, followed by the release of “Viktor Casanova” – the track with the mysterious female opera singer – on Claude VonStrokes new label Mothership Music in July 07. This outstanding track developed into one of the biggest underground club hits of the last few years, highly supported initially by Villalobos, Dice, Sven Vaeth and Luciano, and then played in every corner on the planet from every DJ on heart, from house to techno to electro. Their next EP on Get Physical Music “Zinga” at the beginning of 2008 was again a huge club hit and established the guys profile world wide.

After the success of Viktor Casanova and Zinga there was no way that the Italoboyz could possibly top their own tracks? Wrong! They created an organic techno masterpiece ’Bahia,’ enlisting the help of one of the greatest jazz musicians of our time – John Coltrane. Italoboyz vs. Johan Coltrane “Bahia” is once again a club hit, the third in a row…

After playing at places like Watergate in Berlin, CocoonClub in Frankfurt, The WIRE festival in Tokyo, the Dissonanze Festival in Rome, in front of 6000 enthusiastically screaming people at PollerWiesen open Air in Cologne, gigs in the USA, the Middle East, Africa or Asia, the Italoboyz are handled as one of the hottest and most wanted newcomer. Their first live set presented in front of hundreds of thousand people at Loveparade in Dortmund this year is for sure the highlight of their career so far…

Besides touring Federico and Marco spent every free minute in the studio. They are working on their next EP for Get Physical Music and also on a full length album which will be finished for a release next year…

A life ‘without moving’ was never a serious option for these two…

Walter and Arno don their DJing caps for the 150th edition of the RA podcast.

You may only be aware of Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier’s work as Booka Shade, but their time in the music industry stretches all the way back to the early ’90s, when the pair started working together in a band named Planet Claire. The group was largely centered around synth pop, but after releasing two albums (both of which featured some of deep house diva Lisa Shaw’s first vocal tracks) they disbanded in 1995. By that time, Merziger and Kammermeier had become increasingly interested in electronic music and began to make club tracks under various different pseudonyms, experimenting with trance, techno and house as they left their synth pop sound behind. After flirtations with both the underground and the mainstream (as Perky Park they even remixed a version of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”), the duo got together with Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung of M.A.N.D.Y. and Thomas Koch (AKA DJ T.) to create their Get Physical label, which has gone on to rack up over 100 releases and become a powerhouse in the German electronic music scene.

Merziger and Kammermeier’s production prowess proved to be one of the driving forces behind their initial popularity, with their work for both M.A.N.D.Y. and DJ T. garnering acclaim on top of their own productions as Booka Shade. 2005 was arguably their breakout year, with “Body Language” and “Mandarine Girl” becoming inescapable anthems worldwide and taking their sleek electro-house sound to a much wider audience. Nowadays they’re headlining large club gigs and festivals with their energetic audio/visual live show, and while you generally won’t find them playing over people’s records when you go to see them, they’ve proved their DJing talents with their eclectic addition to the DJ-Kicks series. Their RA podcast—the 150th in our weekly series—sees them in a relatively more straightforward mood, mixing up minimal, electro, tech and boompty house flavours with a couple of surprises along the way.

What have you been working on recently?

We just came home from a US tour, where we played big festivals such as SXSW and ULTRA as well as some club shows. And before that we finished two remixes: one for Moderat, the project of Modeselektor and Apparat, the other one for Bronnt Industries Kapital, a new act on Get Physical. Back in Berlin, we’re continuing production on our new album. It’s coming along great: I think we’ll have a single out after the summer with the album following at the beginning of 2010.

How and where was the mix recorded?

We started the mix while traveling on the tour bus in the States and finished it in Berlin.

Can you tell us a little about the mix?

Like all of our “recorded mixes,” it doesn’t represent a club set but is for home listening. The mix starts off with a brand new track by DJ T., taken from his soon to be released second album, The Inner Jukebox. We’re very happy with what we’ve heard from the album so far. It’s going to be a really cool club album. He produced it together with Thomas Schumacher.

You’ll hear a yet unreleased remix of “Donut,” by a young producer named Ben Hoo and our remix for Moderat. We wanted to include New Order’s dub mix of “Confusion” for a long time. And the very last song comes from David Gray. We have loved this song since it first came out: “Please forgive me if I act a little strange, for I know not what I do.” Love the words.

What gigs do you tend to prefer—the big festivals or the smaller club gigs?

We love them both, really. We would miss something if we could only do either one. The big stages are great, because you have a perfect production and sound, mostly good air (when it’s open air) and a lot of space to perform. In the intimate places you have the whole audience all around you…you can practically reach out and touch the people which is a good experience as well.

What are you up to next?

We’re prepare a new live show and will play selected festival shows during the summer. (Headlining the Friday at Glade Festival in England, for example) and do some DJ sets too. It’s a lot of fun to play around with other people’s music for a change!
