It is a genuine pleasure to have a new mix from a very good friend of the ssgs, Peter Van Hoesen. We’ve talked plenty about Peter on the blog, and we are biased as hell because we happen to like the guy a lot, so I’ll just get straight to the mix. PVH and T2X may have become stamps for a distinctive brand of quality techno, but this has also meant that sometimes the breath of his musical palette has been obscured. While people have learned about his love for new beat, there has been less attention given to his interest in ambient, experimental and related sounds (beyond the obligatory nod to his previous production aliases). So we asked Peter if he’d like to contribute a mix in this vein, and here you have the results. Ambient wouldn’t be quite correct, a more accurate – but also more awkward - description might be non-dancefloor electronic music with a synth bent. Anyway, listen, relax, find out.

Peter has a very busy schedule in September, with some killer gigs coming up:
9 September 2011- The Star Festival, Namura Zousenzyo Atochi, Osaka
10 September 2011 – Smoke Machine, Taipei
17-19 September 2011 – The Labyrinth, Naeba
24 September 2011 – TodaysArt, Den Haag
30 September 30 – Time To Express label night with PVH, Donato Dozzy, Pendle Coven & Samuli Kemppi - Panorama Bar, Berlin

After destroying Tokyo back in May, we are incredibly excited for his set at Labyrinth, and we are also very proud and happy that he is playing in the MNML SSGS room at TodaysArt. For other events and info on Peter and T2X, make sure to check the T2X homepage. And, of course, keep an eye out for remaining copies of “The Labyrinth” EP (T2X17), which are disappearing quickly.

Big thanks to Peter for the mix and we look forward to seeing him very soon in J-land. Enjoy…

Einóma might not be a name that many of our readers recognise, they certainly were new to me when a promo arrived from them last year. But they are not easy to forget after hearing their music. Listening to their “Tvenna” EP (on la madame avec le chien) I was immediately interested, as it had a very distinctive sound: it has a real theatrical feel to it. The music just grows and builds, it enthralls. These guys are making dramatic techno. We always place a high priority on showcasing artists that are forging their own sound signature, and we were keen to hear what they would do in a live set, especially as their releases already feel pretty live in structure and presentation. The results here confirm what we thought: Einóma are creating a distinctive world; it is restless take on techno that continues to evolve, shift and morph. “Music that lies in between” is the description they give to their own music, and this seems about right. It is hard to completely place, but it definitely has something that captivates your attention.

No tracklisting for this as it is a livepa, but it based mainly on their most recent releases. If you are interested in hearing more of their sounds, I’d suggest trying to track down their “Tvenna” EP and also the “Lost & Found” EP they released earlier this year. You can get their releases at the Einóma bandcamp, and for more info check their homepage. Big thanks to Bjarni and Steindór for making this recording for the ssgs. Enjoy!

Today Golden Week starts in Japan, and people here can enjoy a much needed holiday over the next week. It has been a difficult period since the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March, but this country has proven its courage and resilience. Japan has drawn on its inner strength, and it has also benefited from the support shown by our friends around the world. More than anything, it is this feeling of solidarity that has helped. And this is where this special mix comes from – a shared bond with and love for the beautiful country of Japan, from two people with very big and beautiful hearts: Cio D’Or and Donato Dozzy.

The mix is a sublime 40 minute journey combining DJ and live electronics, distinguished by the warmth and love that radiates from this music. Cio and Dozz had been working on this for a while, and after the recent disaster here, they wanted to give this as a gift for Japan. Neel kindly mastered the mix to get it sounding just right. And Donato’s wife, Koto, provided the photo. To accompany the mix, they all provided some words for Japan:

“Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and that huge disaster coming from the Fukushima atomic-reactor was & is a huge shock for the whole world. It distorted a big shadow through my daily life. My first mind was: What to do? How can I help Japan people & all my friends over there?

What can a single human do in this situation?
Steps, that I felt : Not be against something, but for something.
And giving music for Japanese people & friends.
About music… there isn´t much to say, it talks by itself.
Donato & me agreed to transmit our first co-production mix for you, “J”!
Music*** all over you!”

Cio

“There are events and circumstances in life where no words are needed. If it’s true that music is the primordial language, then I’m trying to express my feelings towards the people I love in the only way I know: through the music…

See you in September.”

Donato

“I am very happy that Cio and Donato prepared some musical thoughts for the people of the big “J”. All I could do was to give my little contribution to that, with deep love and friendship.”

If you download and like the mix, we ask that you consider making a donation to a charity, such as: Second Harvest Japan, Save the Children Japan, Ahinaga-ikuekai, or Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Thank you to Cio, Donato, Neel and everyone else involved in making this mix happen. We will be also being doing some promo CDR versions of this at Disk Union, more info on that soon. Now please enjoy this beautiful, heartful mix. Much love from the J.

Ulf Eriksson might not be a name many people instantly recognise, but he is the man responsible for what is one of the most consistently high quality techno labels about: Kontra-Musik. In 2010 Kontra did not have too many releases, but every one was spot on: a remix package of Jason Fine with powerful reworks by Oni Ayhun and Ben Klock, Gunnar Jonsson’s gorgeous ‘Muskelminne’ EP (including ‘Morgonanga’, one of my favourite tracks of the year), an impressive debut from Kondens (made up of Andreas Tilliander and Stefan Thor), and Jason Fine’s ‘Colors’ EP, which represents perhaps his strongest work to date. And how did they start 2011? With Dettemann producing some of his most interesting output of late, and now a series of Mokira EPs with originals being complemented by some killer remixes, which will conclude with the release of the Mokira album. All in all, a pretty good effort, if you ask us…

This is a long way of saying that if you look at what Kontra has been doing, it is pretty clear that whoever is behind it really knows their shit. So we were very keen to hear what Ulf, the label boss of Kontra, would do in a mix. The result do not disappoint. Bringing together a tight selection of quality techno tracks, Ulf creates a strong sense of atmosphere and space in his mix. This is mountain techno, one for dancing in the fog somewhere in the hills.

Ulf had this to say about it:

The mix is featuring a lot of old and new Kontra-Musik tracks. Several are not released yet, but will be soon. It also includes a Mokira – Echospace remix, exclusive to this mnml ssgs mix. Mixed with the Kontra-Musik trax is music that I have played a lot through the years and that all have been important to me. Nothing necessarily new, hot and trendy but instead music with a long lasting quality. The mix is recorded in my living room on 3 technics 1210 decks, one pioneer 800 cdj and a Vestax PMC 50 mixer. No more no less…

Full tracklist for the mix will be up next week. As mentioned, Kontra-Musik are very busy this year. At the moment they’ve got 3 x Mokira 10″ coming out with originals and remixes from Silent Servant, Echospace and Redshape. I can strongly recommend all of these, the Redshape dub in particular. The Mokira album ‘Time Axis Manipulation’ will be out soon on digital and CD, and after that some more EPs from Jonsson/Alter and Kondens. And for anyone in/near Malmö, on 21 May there will be a Mokira release party at Inkonst with Mokira live, Marcel Dettmann and Ulf Eriksson DJ’ing. For more info, check the Kontra-Musik homepage and soundcloud.

Big thanks to Ulf for this mix. Enjoy!

Back with another special, this time from kevin gorman, someone i feel is one of the most under-rated people in techno right now. after producing one of the highlights of the mnml ssgs series last year, this time he has made a more conventional DJ set to mark two important events: a release on ostgut and a tour to japan this weekend. these might be signs that kevin’s distinctive, powerful take on contemporary techno is getting more (and much deserved) attention. the ostgut release is one of the exclusive 12″s coming out of the ben klock berghain mix CD, with kevin’s ’7am stepper’ being paired up with a track from another leading UK techno producer, james ruskin. meanwhile, for our friends in japan, kevin is playing an outdoor party about 2 hours outside of tokyo. it is really great to see him over here, part of a steady string of ssg artists that have been making their debuts here in 2010. techno is going from strength to strength in tokyo! as for kevin’s mix, you can expect a carefully structured and crafted mix, perfectly suited for SSG tastes.

for more info on kevin, check his myspace and the homepage of his label, mikrowave. the details for his japan party this weekend are:

rural open air festival
date : 12:00 May 29 – 16:00 May 30, 2010
venue : yamanashi pref, japan (2h from tokyo). tamagawa camping area
tickets on the day : \6,000, advance ticket : \5,000
advance ticket is available at: ruralopenair@gmail.com

you can find more info through the mnml ssgs mixi page. and for those of you in europe, keep an eye out for upcoming gigs, including a live performance at berghain on 26 june, along with (i believe) some other ssg artists: marcel fengler and norman nodge. nice…

ok, that’s it. enjoy the mix. it’s a beauty. big thanks to kevin for this. more heat next week.

Hello fellow SSGs and Cervidae,

around six weeks or so ago, we were quietly excited to offer a set from Deer, Martin Hirsch’s current project. Deer music takes in a number of different sources and influences, from field recording, electronica, ambient house (now there’s a term you don’t hear much these days), and the full spectrum of Hamburg and Heidelberg-related deep, minimalist house and techno. You can check out what he does at his website.

More immediately, Deer is part of the Weimar scene, that takes in a lot of the other talented/interesting peepz releasing on the Giegling label. Deer’s own release in Giegling (and all releases on said label are limited, with amazing hand done sleeves), is still available from Clone, here. SSGs also hosted a set from Giegling affiliate Kettenkarusell last year that was one of our favourites – put it this way, I have a 30 gig iPod and mostly listen to lossless, and the set is still on there and getting a regular rinse. Fingers crossed the lads are almost recovered from their laptop theft last year…

The last Deer set we offered was, in the words of its author, “a case of ‘i have to do everything improvised in max/msp phase’ that disregarded the notion of building transitions or a longer narrative.” This sparked a back and forth with Martin, Chris and I via email, which ended in the request for what you are about to receive (and may ye be truly thankful).

It’s a typically-contemporary act of pointlessness to describe in words music you can just listen to yourself, so I’ll refrain…. except to say that this set pays very close, smart attention to transitions and narratives. Yes, it’s great. Deer aficionadoes will note the striking musical development since the last set; those new to the sound…. well, I’m sure it’ll endear itself to you. Sorry, no excuse for the punning but too much coffee…

Context from the beast himself: “The set was recorded at the afterparty of an exhibition called “Pagine Da Un Besstiario Fantastico” at the Galleria Civica in Modena, Italy on March 20. Basically an exhibition featuring modern and contemporary art with animal depictions (and in some cases rather crude ones at that). Some surrealists like De Chirico and a lot of unknown (to me) stuff.”

Oh & Ah: as Dave Aju (and every funny comedian) reminds us: timing is…..

everything!

And Deer is playing this weekend in Berlin – not in the Tiergarten. Oh dear. No, here. The link also has a pretty neat description of house music.

it has been a while since we’ve had a serious techno mix on ssgs, but no need to worry, the break ends now with this tight techno workout care of patrick walker. for those who don’t recognise the name, walker is half of forward strategy group (FSG), a UK outfit that has been responsible for some really top notch techno over the last year or two. i saw FSG at plex in london last month and despite a few technical glitches at the start they put together an impressive set of power techno. what i like about FSG is that they are really building on the strong british legacy of the 90s, but doing so in an interesting and quite unique way. these guys are definitely worth keeping an eye on…

for this mix, patrick has made something which is more representative of what he has been doing when DJ’ing and working by himself. it was done using 1 laptop, 2 midi controllers + 1 technics 1210. the result is a tight, powerful mix that has a real sense of coherence and focus to it. i’ve been struggling a bit to find techno mixes lately that have really satisfied me, but this one definitely did the trick. i like its pace and structure.

FSG have a remix on the latest perc trax EP, and they’ve got their own release on the same label coming soon. in addition, patrick is doing some stuff by himself, and also collaborating with inigo kennedy and charlton ravenberg on a new label, destroyaliens. the first release for that is out soon. big thanks to patrick for this mix, and for doing the artwork, thereby saving everyone from my shithouse efforts. ok, techno time. enjoy!

a while ago dozzy sent me some tracks he’d been working on with a friend of his, claudio fabrianesi. these were real killers – best i’d heard from dozz in a while. deep, deep house burners. when i hear a collab, my instinct is always to go & investigate more about the person i don’t know so well. after hearing these tracks, i figured claudio knew a thing or two about house. and this mix he has done for us confirmed my thoughts. not much to say about it, house music done right. that simple.

with these mixes i’ll just add the tracklisting in the comments after a few days, so just check back if you want some IDs.

as well as DJ’ing, claudio is behind the còclea music label. for more info, check his myspace. the good news is that the tracks i mentioned are coming out soon. the EP is called ‘disco infecta’ and will be released may 2010 on mule musiq. this is a great home for some really fantastic tracks. definitely check this EP. perfect slow burning grooves. for now, enjoy some lovely house jams care of claudio…

this is a mixtape i put together the other night. i’ve been wanting to do one for a while, and with my impending departure it felt like the right time. as with previous ‘mixes’, i thought very carefully about the tracks and the way it was composed, but after that it is just crossfading. i recorded it just using a basic mixing program, in realtime and with no cueing, so that means some of the transitions are a bit rough. also, one or two tracks the volumes were too low, so afterwards i fixed it up a bit in audacity. so, basically, the mix is a bit rough. but. but there are plenty of really beautiful tracks in it, with lots of feeling and emotion.

the mix is called ‘shifting patterns’ partly because i felt it reflected the structure of many of the tracks, and also because it was an apt description of my life now, and over the last 18 months. my time in the UK has been, and continues to be, unstable, shifting, and challenging. it has been very difficult and there have been some very dark periods. but during this time there has also been lots of incredibly positive and happy moments, achievements, new friendships made, lessons learned and even, on rare occasions, brief moments of peace. i tried to express some of these experiences and feelings in this mix. have a listen if you want. it is a good representation of where my head is at right now.

this mix is dedicated to yuri.

this week we continue with our very slow reliving of last year’s labyrinth, now with a 2nd contribution from one of the standout acts of the festival:Â natural/electronic.system.

i know it is something that we keep on talking about, but having a distinctive sound is absolutely key for us. there is plenty of good music out there, we want something a bit more. and that’s what is so great about what natural/electronic.system do. they are really developing a sound and feel which is distinctly their own. these guys just pitch it down a bit deeper than most, then take you under.

this is what natural/electronic.system. had to say about the mix:

“2009 has been a year full of emotions for us. Something so special that it’s difficult to find good words to describe it, but music can be really handy with that…

The idea behind the podcast this time is to recreate the light differences during sunshine through the music… A start with light that gradually fades into darkness… This would sort of recall what we experienced in Japan during the 3hrs of our set, but at the same time with a different approach. So you can feel the flow changing during the recording and slightly differences with the last mix we made.

This mix is our wish for a great new year to all our old and new friends around the world.
Just enjoy it…

Antonio + Valerio”

it was an absolute pleasure getting to know antonio and valerio in japan last year, and i am really happy they were able to do another mix for us. it is nice the way this mix series has become a way not only of discovering new sounds, but also finding new friends. i keep noticing a very strong link between quality music and quality people…

check myspace for more info on natural/electronic.system. there should be a tracklist for this in the next week. enjoy this one, it’s a real trip.

When SSGs first invisaged a mix series, the fundamental thing we agreed on was that the artists we chose chould be given a blank canvas: using a single mp3 file, preferably at 320, we just asked people whose music we love to make us something, anything.

Well, actually, an almost blank canvas. We did insist on a few conditions, which were these: go deep, follow your sound, make an emotional connection.

I’ve been really staggered by how positively people have responded to this over the course of the series. Not only have Chris and I been really blown away by how may of our favourite artists have agreed to be part of the project, but the quality and diversity of the mixes has been, I hope you’ll all agree, truly fucking magnificent and constantly surprising.

And now, well, what can I say? Redshape has come up with the goods, managing to do ‘all of the above’ as well as take the series in his own inimitable direction, with a mix that is boisterous, playful, and that reveals, to me at least, a whole bunch of different clues to the different parts of the redshaped world.

I won’t spoil the ride further by describing the scenery in detail, sufficed to say – this one’s a doozy.

Ladies, gentleman, machines, and other forms of extraterrestrial intelligence who are tuned in, we give you… Mr Shape.

For more info on Redshape, check his home page and myspace. As usual, tracklist to follow. Many thanks to Redshape for this.

we said we planned to start 2010 with some special mixes, and we were not kidding… over the next 3 weeks we have mixes from three artists that really defined 2009 for us, and make us feel very confident about the future of techno and house in 2010 and beyond. first up: mr levon vincent.

in february last year, i connected with anthony parasole during a trip to NY, and the plan was hatched for a collaboration between mnml ssgs and deconstruct – the label anthony and levon do together. the first result of this collab was an excellent mix from anthony, and now it is levon’s turn… what to say about levon vincent? there is a pretty broad consensus that he was one of the guys who owned 2009. not only did he release some of the best and most distinctive records of the year on labels like deconstruct, novel sound, underground quality and ostgut, he probably had the best titles for his tracks too. fittingly, his final release for 2009 was entitled ‘double jointed sex freak‘, which i think is his strongest EP to date. for those who have yet to hear any of his music, my suggestion would be to track down a copy of the underground quality tape club CD, which includes a contribution from levon that is a great introduction to his sound. in addition to his productions, levon’s stature as a DJ has increased with equal speed following a string of impressive gigs throughout europe (we’ve been getting reports) and his RA podcast being one of the strongest mixes they’ve had. anyway, enough talking from me, here are some words levon wrote to go with the mix:

“My thought was to make a polite gesture as an opening for the new decade – to start the new year off right by giving a gift to everyone… I hope you enjoy it and my warmest wishes for 2010 and beyond.” – Levon Vincent

i’ve also uploaded it onto our soundcloud. as always, tracklist to follow. for more info on levon vincent, check his myspace. our deepest thanks to levon for this special mix. a quality mix from a quality individual. exactly what mnml ssgs are about. we really can’t think of a better way to start a new year and a new decade. so, to echo his sentiments, lets make 2010 a good one!

last year, benjamin brunn gave us a special christmas ssg mix. we really liked the idea, and thought it’d be nice to do it again this year. perhaps this will become an annual ssg tradition, who knows… like with brunn, we wanted someone who kind of fits with christmas, someone that combines a warm personality with beautiful music. in this regard, we thought yves de mey (eavesdropper) would be perfect. yves is known for his work under his own name, as eavesdropper, and along with peter van hoesen as sendai. earlier this year, he released ‘lichtung‘, a beautiful 35 minute piece that is one of my favourite albums of 2009. i’m not sure how best to categorise it – abstract/ambient/experimental/whatever – it is lovely and worth tracking down on the line label. anyway, i was lucky to meet yves at labyrinth in september and have struck up a friendship with him since then. i’ve discovered the warmth of his music strongly reflects his character. he really is perfect for doing the christmas mix for us. this is what he said about the mix:

“I became interested in ambient music in the early days of Techno, when every party night had an ambient after-party as a counterweight for the mayhem, the sweaty club rooms and the chemically fueled body workout. For a lot of people, ambient was nothing more than audible wallpaper, but I was immediately fascinated by the ever-changing textures, the stripped down rhythms and tempo and the time and space those ambient tracks imposed on the listening experience. During the last 2 decades I’ve spent an incredible amount of time listening to minimal music, avant-garde, drones… finding out there’s a huge scene of artists who are not afraid of making essential music, essential as in reducing compositions to fundamental elements that evoke emotions and state of being.

The request for an ambient mix came at a good time: wintertime. Probably my favorite season with its crisp air, cosy warmth inside, more dark than light, and the occasional snowy landscapes. I wanted to combine certain tracks that have a strong emotional connection,
music that often sounds like frozen moments in time, compositions that take you from the outside to the inside, from cold to warm. I allowed the majority of the tracks to take their time to develop, to go slowly, at the pace of a glacier… This music makes me think of how a snow blanket makes everything look more uniform, flattened in a way, but more brilliant. And at times it reminds me of how an environment’s sound becomes muffled when covered in ice and snow.”

not much more to add… apologies to everyone down in the southern hemisphere, who are currently in the middle of summer (i am still not used to december being so cold). but for them, this mix could work nicely late at night to cool off slightly…

big thanks to yves for taking the time to produce this beautiful mix. for the moment he is working with peter van hoesen on their sendai project, and he recently started working on a new full album. with sendai he just released a various artists EP on time to express, and there is more to come next year. for more info, you can check his homepage.

if you want more info, check eric’s myspace or homepage. you can catch him playing regularly around new york, and he is heading over to europe for some gigs in the 2nd half of february and early march 2010. a good opportunity to catch someone who is definitely on the rise.

This week we’ve got something a bit different from many of the previous mixes, and definitely contrasts with the intense techno we had last week with mike parker. mx43 comes from lawrence english, an australian artist who has been making some amazing and beautiful ambient, experimental and more abstract music for a while now. this is not a great way of describing his sounds, but he covers a fair bit of ground, and i am not sure how exactly to pin him in down in a sentence or two. but from what i can tell, quality and creativity are his defining trademarks.

i must confess, i was rather late to the lawrence english party, discovering him only last year with his stunning ‘kiri no oto‘. after boomkat gave the album a ‘massive recommendation’ i decided to check it out, and was not disappointed. ‘kiri no oto’ translates roughly to ‘the sound of fog’ and across the album he expertly explores those ideas. he followed it up this year with, ‘a colour for autumn‘, which – as the title suggests – is conveying the feeling and sounds of autumn. if you haven’t heard this, i strongly suggest tracking it down. ‘a colour for autumn’ is definitely in my top long players for 2009. intensely beautiful music. i cannot recommend it strongly enough.

as soon as i heard ‘a colour for autumn’, i immediately contacted lawrence about doing a mix. luckily he agreed. for me, at least, his mix reflects much of what i love about his music: it has an amazing depth and, in a strange way, a beautiful feeling of calm and tranquility. these are sounds to get lost in.

sendspace mirror

if you want more info about lawrence english, you can check out his website or have a look at the homepage his excellent label, room40, which continues to release some amazing stuff, including a lot of cool special projects like limited releases on tape. and if you happen to be in/around london, there is a 2 night room40 showcase taking place tonight and tomorrow (wednesday 9th and thursday 10th december). it is a fantastic lineup (including english) and i am seriously unhappy i’ll be missing it by a day or two. definitely head down if you can.

huge thanks to lawrence for taking the time to make this mix, especially as he finished it while touring all around europe. we are very happy that we can present music like this here at mnml ssgs. our original desire was to include more mixes of this kind in the series, but this hasn’t quite happened. so we are very glad we have beautiful contribution from lawrence english. enjoy.

Following on from last week’s killer from jay ahern, now some more heat from a good friend of mnml ssgs, mike parker. this is his 2nd contribution to the series, the first being way back with mx6. things have developed a lot since then and the strength of the early mixes – from people like mike – were key in shaping the overall series. so we definitely owe him a debt of gratitude and we are very glad that he agreed to do another mix. the result is exactly what you’d expect: deep, dark, driving and hypnotic. this is a sound mnml ssgs has become well known for, and mike’s mix was the 1st example of it here, so it is fitting it will probably also be the last mix of this kind in the series. beyond that i dont really have too much to say, the music speaks for itself, as does mike’s distinctive take on techno.

Mike delivered a killer set of power techno at last year’s labyrinth, and he is about to make his return visit to japan this week, playing in tokyo with another ssg favourite, cio d’or on saturday 5 december. for those lucky enough to be going, this is a great taste of what to expect, and for the rest of us, we still get to enjoy a prime techno cut from a quiet achiever.

Mike is a man of many talents, as can be seen from the picture. for info on his various arts – visual and musical – check his website and his homepage. big thanks to mike for the mix.

one of the trends i’ve noticed over the last year or two is that many of the producers making waves are people who’ve been at it for a long time. these aren’t new kids on the block armed with a macbook and a cracked version of ableton. two names that immediately spring to mind are peter van hoesen and move d, but there are plenty more. another one is jay ahern. this is a name you might not instantly recognise. but if you’ve been keeping up with the best of techno over the last year, chances are you might have heard records from two projects he does: the hauntologists, composed of jay and stefan schneider, and a new solo project, cheap and deep, which has been getting serious play from a lot of techno heavyweights (and rightly so).

we first got in touch with jay about mix a year or so ago, in relation to yet another one of his guises – add noise (check the ‘handwerk’ releases – they flew under the radar a bit, but are some seriously quality techno cuts). it didn’t quite work at that time, but luckily for everyone we reconnected this year. so this has been a while in the making. but like so many other mixes in this series, definitely worth the wait. in true ssg fashion, jay has dug deep and put put together a special live recording for all of us, made up of hauntologists and cheap and deep material.

one thing we look for with contributions to this series are mixes that give a real representation of the artist’s sound and that is certainly the case here. jay’s live reflects his productions perfectly: raw, dirty, analog machine techno. this is what jay said about it in an email:

“this stuff is done exactly that way [machine techno], i don’t even use midi, i use the 808 as the master, slave the sampler to it using a special box and then the 101 gets a clock pulse from the 808 , and i punch in notes live on the 101 while tweaking the 303 and 808, plus a bit of dubbing on the mixer… there’s a couple of moments in the mix where i am really sweating, trying to juggle all that stuff, but i think that ‘human touch’ thing works out ok.”

fuck yes it works out ok. much more than that.

mnml ssgs mx41: hauntologists vs cheap and deep
sendspace mirror

* i’ve posted the mix up on soundcloud too. but it appears we’ve reached out limit for the free soundcloud account. and since we make zero money out of this page, we can’t afford one of the premium accounts. just use the fairtilizer direct link instead. if you need another mirror, let me know.

massive thanks to jay for putting this together for us. we are very proud and happy to have this, it really fits exactly with what we are about. big respect. for more info on jay, check his homepage and his twitter. now, it’s time for some machine techno..

thanks to iori for taking the time to put this together for us. you can find his other galaxy mixes over at deeper frequency (you just need to register your email to get access) and more info, as well as some of his productions, at his myspace.

while there won’t be any live recordings from labyrinth, what we will have is a series of mixes from artists who performed there. these mixes will build on the energy and inspiration of those intense couple of days and try to share some of the magic with all our techno brothers and sisters who were not able to be there with us. fittingly the first of these mixes comes from donato dozzy.

donato’s closing set at last year’s labyrinth was a defining moment for himself as an artist, labyrinth, and later for mnml ssgs when we shared it with the world. that moment cannot be recreated so we are not trying to. instead, this year we are presenting a different side of dozz, and a different side of labyrinth. the night before his 7 hour monster closing, donato treated those still standing after function to a stunning 3 hour ambient journey. and this is what he has recreated for us…

so this year we get to hear another part of dozz: it may not be headfuck techno, but it still warps your brain. these perfectly arranged other worldly sounds transport you somewhere else for a couple of hours. the whole mix has a beautiful sense of calm and tranquillity to it. often with ambient music the imagery used is outer space, but for me this mix feels like deep sea diving: you float around all these sounds swimming by as you dive deeper and deeper. my advice would be download both parts of the mix, find a couple of spare hours and some good speakers or headphones, then let dozz take you some place special…

mnml ssgs mx39: donato dozzy pt 1

soundcloud mirror pt 2

i’d like to thank donato for taking the time to put together this lovely mix, and more generally, for his friendship and support. donato has played an important role in the way mnml ssgs has developed, and we are deeply grateful for all that he has done. i really feel this gentle and delicate mix strongly reflects donato’s personality: someone who dreams, cares and believes. beautiful music from a beautiful heart. enjoy.

we’ve had a bit of a much needed rest with the ssg mixes, but now we are back for more, and this is the first in a series of killer mixes on the way…

mx38 comes from one of the ssgs’ favourite countries, italy, care of nuel. when i was in london in june, i talked to donato about who he’d suggest we approach for mixes. his immediate response was nuel, the man he has co-produced the first two aquaplano records with. unsurprisingly, dozz was on the money and nuel has delivered a really beautiful mix for us. this is what nuel said about it:

“it’s me, (with my good records, my mistakes and my pindaric flights between musical genres). being without a studio i chose the ‘one take live’ approach, with no edit at all… and i like it because i think it’s alive and true.”

alive and true. yep. that is a pretty accurate description. what really appeals to me about nuel’s mix is the flow and tempo. the distinguishing feature is a very slow, but distinct build, with nuel gradually warming things up over the 60 minutes. this is a high quality mix, one that reflects the skills and talent of a mature dj who really gets it.

building on the success of the first two releases, in october nuel will release a solo ep on aquaplano ltd, which is a sister label for nuel, donato and their other close friends to release some special projects on. nuel sent me his release a while ago, and it is definitely one of my favourite eps of 2009 (and it has already been charted by dettmann). it evokes a similar vibe to the other 2 aquaplanos, but also clearly demonstrates nuel’s own sounds. my favourite is the A2, which is a lovely ambient track. keep an eye out for it at hardwax in the coming weeks.

big thanks to nuel for taking the time to put together this mix. for more info, check his myspace. ok, that’s it. enjoy the mix. more soon…

there is not too much description necessary for this mix: ‘house classics’ pretty much sums it up. plenty of bomb records here and the whole mix has a great vibe for those in the northern hemisphere currently enjoying summer. and, as pete wrote to me in an email, ‘it actually sounds quite a bit like lerosa – or, at least, you can tell the bits from house’s past that appeal to him.’ a great mix of fun, memories and a bit of education along the way.

lerosa released an EP earlier this year, ‘minefield’, on real soon. there is also a new EP with donato dozzy coming out soon on apnea, as well as a new solo EP on uzuri, and possibly a very limited mini LP on tape cassette for further records towards the end of the year. plenty to look forward to from our talented friend… and if you happen to be in/around dublin, lerosa is doing a vinyl only DJ set at the sycamore on august 2nd, and on august 14th he is playing live at a test party also featuring donato dozzy on the decks. from what i’ve heard leo and donato are very old friends so i have a feeling this will be a special night. for more info check lerosa’s myspace.

big thanks to leo for this lovely mix. we’ve got the tracklisting, so don’t worry you won’t have to go crazy remembering these records for too long. enjoy these house sounds before next week we take you back to headfuck techno territory with mx34 coming from traversable wormhole.

after a short break, we are back with another ssg mix, this time from new york’s anthony parasole. during my brief trip to NYC in february, i went to a ‘save the cannibals’ party where he was playing along with cassy. i was impressed with what i heard from anthony and thought he’d fit well into our mix series. he agreed and i’m happy to share the result with you all.

anthony has been making a name for himself over the last year or two as part of a resurgent new york scene. besides dj’ing, he recently co-founded the deconstruct label with levon vincent, which has begun in fine fashion with the 1st two releases from levon being very well received. anthony has also started along with bryan kasenic (beyond booking/bunker) the house-n-home loft-party series, which has been bringing a string of quality house and techno acts to new york. and with the next deconstruct release, he’ll be making production debut. so all in all, anthony is a busy boy…

anthony’s mix is another all vinyl effort, recorded in one take. what i like about it is the whole mix has a really great flow and structure. it all fits together (this is very important for me). simply put, this is house with balls – the mix has a real raw feeling to it that really appeals. anyway, enough from me.

the 3rd deconstruct is a double ep featuring a dj qu track, ‘party people clap’, along with remixes from anthony parasole and fred p , levon vincent, and jus-ed. the next house-n-home party is on 1 august featuring santiago salizar and dj qu. after that will be their one 1 year anniversary on 12 september with 2 special guests. plenty to look forward to… for more info about anthony, make sure to check his myspace.

big thanks to anthony for the mix, and also to levon who mastered it (yes, the ssgs know how to treat you well). tracklisting will be up next week along with the next ssg mx: another repeat performance, this time care of lerosa, who has done a special dj set of house classics. after all the headfuck techno, we figure it is time for a bit of house. enjoy!

Source : MNML SSGS

and back to italy we go… mx31 comes care of giorgio gigli. for the ssg mixes we have a couple of lists: (1) ‘people who have agreed to do mixes’, (2) ‘people we plan to ask to do mixes’, and a much longer list of (3) ‘people we asked to do mixes and declined or never replied’. gigli was on the 2nd list for quite a while, though i hesitated about contacting him because i didn’t want this to become an all italian affair! but after starting up a conversation with the excellent label prologue music, on which giorgio has 2 new releases, it felt like the time was right. luckily we got it sorted and giorgio put together this mix for us.

one of the most interesting things for me about this series is hearing the way different contributors structure their mixes. what i really love about giorgio’s mix is the way it builds – it starts with deep, ambient soundscape and goes from there, gradually raising the tempo. in some senses, it reminds me of the way one of my favourite mix cds – tobias thomas’ smallville – is composed.

this is what giorgio had to say about the mix:

“this is a vinyl-only dj set (i like to specify i’m a vinyl lover and collector).

i did it without any digital process, so i think that if someone finds some imperfections it must be considered a quality and not a defect, this is the difference between a man to a computer machine: it is the exact proof that we are humans.

this is a trip through dark scenarios, rarefied and disordered moments, where sometimes there is a ray of sunshine that illuminates our face. i like to think that, with the noise of the turbines that hypnotize you, trying to find a way out.”

these feelings are not only reflected in his dj’ing, but also in his productions. his recent release on prologue music, ‘magnetic field’, was appopriately described in a RA review as ‘music that evokes the dawn of time as well as the end of the world… an intriguing balance of the abstract and controlled.’ and while this is very strong, i must admit that i prefer his forthcoming ‘observation document #1′ also on prologue. it is a really incredible release that goes further and deeper than ‘magnetic field’. keep your eye out for these… and following on will be ‘observation document #2′, which i am sure will be equally hypnotic.

for more info, make sure to check giorgio gigli ‘s myspace and his webpage. thanks to prologue for helping make this happen – keep an eye on them as they have some really excellent releases in store, which i know many ssg readers will be interested in. and, of course, much respect to giorgio for taking the time to put this mix together.
