JANUARY 2012 // MIXED IN BERLIN

The last podcast of the Micro_MUTEK.ES series showcases Argentina’s DILO (aka Franco di Lorenzo), a producer who has released music on European labels such as Hope Central, Lessizmore, Soma, and [a]pendics.shuffle (under his alias Cascabel Gentz). Dilo is also responsible for the label Igloo Records, which has released material from the likes of Pinkler Ismael, From Karaoke To Stardom and himself, this time as another one of his projects, Elephant Pixel.

DILO is one of those artists currently residing in Berlin, but with very little time to play master of the house because of his constant travels to Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia or Russia. His sets are based on a direct, clean and skeletal techno sound, with the shapes and colors that are characteristic of his Latin American roots gaining ground in cold and grey Berlin. This sound has begun to take on new vigour with his debut album, Ethereal.

This podcast showcases some of his exclusive tracks taken from his upcoming album, and offers a taste of what we can expect from his show at Nocturne 2 on February 9th with Luomo and Venezuela’s DJ Moreon.

Biography

Jacek Sienkiewicz is a shadowy figure. Despite 10+ years of running its own label and releasing much-praised records through numerous prolific European labels, he somehow manages to walk his own path towards a very peculiar vision of contemporary electronic music. With one foot deep in classic Detroit and Chicago dance scene, and the other in modern jazz and classical music, Jacek’s tracks for the past ten years always try to find a right balance between the avant-garde and dancefloor, between primal emotions and highly sophisticated sonic wizardry.
Jacek was born in 1976 in Warsaw where he still resides. DJing soon led to playing live, and his memorable debut took place in Autumn of 1996, while scoring an art performance at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. This place will also mark the comeback towards more experimental sounds, as Jacek debuts his new pieces at the vary same place, in February, 2012.
After years of recording for prolific dance labels, a decade of playing various dance events, Jacek Sienkiewicz decided to separate his dancefloor-friendly persona from the quiet, inward-bound incarnation as a modern composer. Thus, from 2012, his club-oriented gigs will be billed as Recognition, while his given name will be used solely for unique performances, trying to explain his current path of artistic expression. This time, casting all the inspirations aside, Jacek decided to built something entirely on his own, digging deep into the subconscious to bring to life all what was left unspoken for years.

Location: Berlin
Format: Club Knast Landshut 2011
Duration: 121 min
Size: 79 MB

Florian Meindl is a DJ, producer and sound designer. In addition to numerous collaborations with international artists he is busy with producing remixes (for Röyksopp, Hot Chip…), running his label FLASH Recordings and composing new music. He has successfully completed his BA studies at the London College of Music, which helps him producing his upcoming artist album.
He also writes articles about music production in magazines like “FutureMusic” and does loops & sample bundles for his own brand “Riemann Kollektion” and “Samplemagic”. Till now his productions have been released on labels such as Trapez, Stil vor Talent, Resopal, Herzblut and Kling Klong.
The 38th and current release on his own label FLASH Recordings is in production; this serves as a platform for continuous development and promises many unheard sound creations from Meindl’s universe.

If you ask the 26 years old musician about the origin of his exceptional career, he will describe it as an “early identification with electronic music” which occurred in a small village in beautiful Upper Austria. He sees himself as an artist who is passing this message on to a new generation.
The collaboration with Oliver Koletzki, founder and owner of Stil vor Talent, was certainly an important milestone. Both generated trend-setting productions from which some of the current club tunes and hits emerged. Meindl’s Solo E.P. “Sputnik” is his standard release, one of the essentials of a new minimal style, as is “Blast” which has just been remixed by Format:B for the100th release on Trapez. All in all, Meindl has released more than 100 tracks in very different genres during the course of his young musical development.

After prolonged stays in London Meindl, having adopted Berlin as his home, finally made to move to Berlin in 2009. Here he found the stage for further developing his music. From his new home-base he tours the world’s top clubs, because apart from the exceptional variety of his very own musical style both in music production and composition, he is known more than anything else for his precision in creating driving and diversified DJ sets. Closely following the present development, this demanding representative of the next generation of electronic music is presently focussing on the expansion of his international work. However, Meindl still finds the time to present his original and unique sound branding to a curious party crowd, which is rapidly developing into a loyal community of fans.

When one experiences the modest authority of this sound artist in the sometimes slightly morbid and fast moving scenario of today’s club music, one can look forward to the continued development of electronic music. Florian Meindl is certainly one of the most interesting representatives of the next generation of electronic music producers – his first artist album is in progress featuring a variety of singers and musicians.

Winning fans over one mix at a time, Germany’s Patrick Zigon does it again with a gleaming deep diving mix chartering untravelled waters to emerge with precious sonic pearls and dimes. We can almost proclaim that going deep is going up. Bravo!

WHERE WHEN AND HOW WAS THIS MIX RECORDED?

I recorded this mix in my “Traumraum” studio in southern germany. I work with Traktor and Timecode-Vinyls. I play records since 1996, so i still need the vinyl-feeling in my hands ;-)

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MIX?

The mix shows the kind of music i love and play in clubs where people like innovative sound. Deep and hypnotic tracks from different genres such as deep house and dub techno.

TOP 3 WEAPONS IN THE BAG?

Mathew Jonson – Dayz [Crosstwon Rebels]
Marc DePulse – Lessons In Dub [Ostwind]
Patrick Zigon – Black Out feat. Paulo Olarte (Himan Remix) [Danza Macabra]

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

There are loads of influences, not only electronic music. I love jazz and classical music for example. if i would start to drop names, we’d need a lot of space, so i keep it simple: biggest influence is music that touches my soul, doesn’t matter which genre.

EVER THOUGHT OF MOVING TO BERLIN?

Yeah sure i thought about it. A few years ago i’ve been pretty sure to move there. But i love the place where i’m living. Constance is a small beautiful city near to switzerland and austria, with a big beautiful lake. It’s an important inspiration for me, so at the moment there is no need to move there.

WHAT ARE SOME FUTURE PROJECTS OF YOURS WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO?

2011 i started some interesting projects and collaborations. Next releases are the amazing second remix pack of my album “The Alpha State” and a collaboration EP on Tanzbar Musik called “With A Bigly Help Of My Friends EP” with Martin Eyerer, Todd Bodine, Louis Osbourne etc. 2012 i will start my label and will tour the globe, so enough things to do ;-)

Techno with a touch of the cinematic.

It seems somehow clumsy to say it, but the defining feature of Max Cooper’s music is melody. And glitch. But mainly melody. The UK artist has been DJing since the late ’90s, turning his hand to production around the middle of the ’00s as a way of generating more bookings. It worked. Cooper has produced music for a number of European labels since making his entrance, although Cologne’s Traum Schallplatten has by far been his preferred home: No less than ten releases bearing his name have seen the light of day over the last couple of years, including soaring club hits such as “Harmonisch Serie.” This prolific form has translated to Cooper’s live show, in which he regularly twists out his material from Ableton and an APC40 for up to two hours.

As if to further emphasize the point, RA.281 showcases no less than five unreleased Max Cooper productions, forming the spine of a mix that through artists like Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Amon Tobin and Underworld presents a panoramic view of Cooper’s tastes and influences.

What have you been up to recently?

Working like a fiend. I’m attempting to keep up with my production commitments but have a life as well. It’s like when you go to check an email to do the one specific job you need to do for the day, but in the process find five other VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO (possibly even written in capitals), each one referring to five other emails containing equally important URGENT STUFF, and so on. The branching tree of exponential confusion. Getting the opportunity to do this mix for you was a greatly welcomed excuse to ignore everything else and do what I actually love, so thank you!

How and where was the mix recorded?

I made the mix at home in my studio with my laptop and not much else. It’s the same as my productions in that way; I don’t use lots of machines, just lots of completely not live at all fiddling with details.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

The mix is a balance of contrast against continuity. I think that contrast can make any musical message more powerful. Like if everything is really beautiful and soft and quiet and then some nasty drill and bass drops its brutality will have more impact than it would in the context of a full set of noisy mania. Then there are contrasts of melody versus atonality, glitch versus simplicity, old versus new etc. But a whole set like this is going to have zero flow and wouldn’t really work well in most clubs, and I wanted to make something representative of what I play out too. So the result is this amalgamation of genres which I’m in to, which I hope holds together in some sort of reasonable way. There’s a fair few exclusives in there too, which won’t have been heard anywhere else yet.

Do you see your sound, and in particular your use of melody, as part of a niche within the wider scene?

There does seem to be some sort of niche, but thankfully it’s not well defined at the moment, and doesn’t have a genre name. That means it can cover quite a range of different artists and stay fresh with maximum flexibility in the sound. I prefer it like that because I’ve never managed to settle on one or even a few genres which I would be happy to stick to. I’ve tried my luck with everything like a dutty genre stop out.

The fact that you were studying genetics while pursuing a music career seems to get brought up a lot, but did you have an ultimate non-musical aim in mind for after you’d finished education?

I was hoping that I could keep doing science research and music at the same time indefinitely, and I was working in science for some time, trying to get my own research program off the ground. Music was always something I worked hard on and loved, but I didn’t ever plan to make a living from it because it seemed too unlikely a basket to be worth putting all my eggs in. Then the science funding faltered at the same time as some new music opportunities arose, namely Traum, and I thought, OK, why not give this a proper go and see what happens? I’m pretty sure I’ll go back to some sort of academic work at some point in future, though. I miss it a lot.

What are you up to next?

There are some nice gigs on the way. I’m really busy until Xmas, including a Saturday night slot at ADE next week, the electronica night FIELDS in London on November 4th and an Australian tour next month. I have remixes of Ripperton and Agoria coming on Systematic and Infine, EPs coming on Herzblut and Last Night on Earth, plus an electronica remix of a classic I can’t talk about yet on Skint, and some modern-classical-derived work via a collaborative project with Michael Nyman.

I’m also excited about developing my live show further with some brand-new amazingness in touchscreen technology coming from the guys at Liine, which I’m sure you’ll hear all about shortly. I’ve got to get my album finished soon too, really. That’s been held up again and again by opportunities that were too good to turn down. I’ll need to cut myself off from everything for a while to get that done.

Biography

London based Tim Green is one of those producers who doesn’t turn in a lot of filler tracks. His unique style and flare shine for all to see when the 25 year old puts his music out there. Ask some of the worlds top labels such as Cocoon, Get Physical or Dirtybird, on which Tim regularly releases some of his finest work. Tracks like Lone Time, Old Sunshine, Kitch-in, Mr. Dry as well as countless remixes for the likes of Cassius, Booka Shade, Tiefschwarz & Claude Von Stroke have become anthems in the house, techno and electronic world.

Tim’s music has been destroying discerning dancefloors for little under 4 years. Amassing a huge army of fans and supporters across the globe. It has been championed by the likes of Sven Vath, Pete Tong, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Sasha & John Digweed, Hot Chip, Luciano, Deadmu5, MANDY, Dubfire, Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier, Joris Voorn, Nic Fanciulli, Matthias Tanzmann, Steve Angello, Anja Schnieder and many more of the worlds top artists. Beatport top 10’s, a BBC Radio1 Essential Mix, and award nominations have followed, and his rise from Bedroom producer to highly acclaimed electronic artist is complete.

As a DJ, Tims talents have taken him to every corner of the globe. From Asia, Australia, South America, North America, and extensively across Europe Tim can be found rocking dancefloors every weekend in some of the worlds best clubs. From Fabric London, to Womb Tokyo, Watergate Berlin, Studio 80 Amsterdam, Tribe Festival Brazil, Rex Club Paris, Circus Liverpool, Mondo Madrid, Nuit Sonores Festival France, Lost Baggage Sydney and many more. Not to mention his own club night called Bedlam which he holds in his home county of Kent and welcomes along esteemed colleges to a raucous party atmosphere.

Whats on the cards now you may ask? A busy dj schedule across North America, South America, Asia, Ibiza, UK & extensively across the rest of Europe, but that’s not all. Tim is currently working on his debut artist album, which is sure to catapult his profile even higher than into the upper echelons of the electronic world. Expect the unexpected. Like we said, he doesn’t turn in a lot of filler tracks…

Album overview

Hectic times require adequate measures. Shorten the text message, shorten anyURL, filter a newsfeed to make a broadband broader – in any way, take a shortcut wherever you intend to go.
While the world is struggling for convenience, those who chose the road less travelled will soon become – or already are? – outsiders.

In many ways this is the case of Jacek Sienkiewicz – with over 30 releases behind, and over a decade of running his own label, he persistently followed his very own path, creating music that very soon began to be impossible to define. Friendly, but not fraternizing with everyone and his family, modest, but stubborn only in a positive way, Jacek is an individual with clear, personal vision and an unorthodox approach to music – light years away from the hectic, utilitarian ethos of club-derived electronic beats.

And this story finally took shape – at the same time rock solid and otherworldly ethereal – in the form of “On the Road”, without any doubt one of the few rare records, this complex and challenging, to be derived in recent years from the music formerly known as techno. This album successfully attempts to embrace virtually all aspects of modern electronic music – from rave-like club bangers, through Detroitish passion and deep house-like style, towards ambient soundscapes that are Mariana Trench deep. Although “Departure” and “Arrival” are clearly marked, in fact this is a journey without a beginning or end, an endless peregrination in search of the lost chords, primal rhythms and melodies coming supposedly from another world.

“On the Road” is also another collaboration with Cocoon – starting with “Téchnè”, through the memorable “Displaced”, the cycle is now completed with one of the most experimental albums to appear on Sven Väth’s label to date. This record is not easy and is definitely demanding attention – but it’s also rewarding like no other.

“On the Road” encapsulates Jacek’s journey to date – and is by no means its closing chapter. Quite the contrary – it’s a blueprint for an even more advanced attempt to create a truly timeless piece of art without denying its obvious, energetic and joyful roots. This is proper music – full of energy, life, impossibly complex yet light as a feather, dense, thought-provoking and playful at the same time. Balancing between dirty noises and angelic melodies it is still moving and at times simply breath-taking. From the opening drone, in a second turned into a whirlwind of sounds and noises, via robotic fanfares for the common traveller and muscular bass-driven anthems for still non-existent dancefloors, towards ambient-like bliss – we hear mature, totally original musician, an artist with the one and only approach to a sound that is both perfectly clear – and amazingly multi-layered.

“On the Road” took several years to complete – but as a whole, for the keen listener will surely bring years of amusement, as new sounds, voices and brilliantly clever arrangement patterns are revealed with each new listen. It’s not Detroit nor Santiago, not Sheffield nor Berlin, it’s not even the sound of Jacek’s home town of Warsaw – this is the real music of the spheres.

Biography

Jacek Sienkiewicz is definitely one of the pioneers of contemporary electronic music, both in his native Poland and Eastern Europe in general. He is also a prime example of hard working, highly original artist that takes no compromises and follows his very own vision, even if it means a lack of visible commercial success.

Jacek is by no means a bandwagon jumper, quite the contrary: some of his ideas, even sketched via his past releases, are still to be recognized and appreciated by every current trend followers.
Jacek started his musical career in mid-90s as a DJ, championing tracks by masters of stripped-down, hypnotic club music, soon to become known as ‘minimal’. But with all respect due to the classics of 90s Detroit and Chicago, his vision of modern club music soon became much too broad to be pigeonholed as yet another Robert Hood follower.
Experiments with analogue machines soon led Jacek to producing his own music – and playing it live. By ’96 he completely ditched DJing, and his very first live show – which took place at Warsaw’s Centre for Contemporary Art – was a example of his love of vintage Roland synths and analogue sequencing. Soon, the Recognition label came to life – issuing debut CD sounding equally rough and melodic, a blueprint of things to come.

After first few vinyl releases, Jacek spent some time living in Berlin – years before everyone and their mothers moved there. This resulted in a string of EPs for German labels – like then-budding Trapez, underrated De:Bug Hartwaren and finally prolific Klang. Early Recognition singles found their way to Sven Vath’s record bag and soon Jacek has become the first artist to release a full album (and another two to follow) on Frankfurt’s finest, Cocoon Records.

Recognition Records is by no means the most important factor in realizing Jacek’s unique vision of club music – definitely dancefloor-friendly, but also bearing some sort of organic complexity and a rare attention to detail. Recognition catalogue is now approaching 30 releases, most of them documenting Jacek’s constatnt experiments with sound and rhythm, proving his unparalleled approach to the music formerly known as minimal techno. The label is also a platform for lesser-known musicians and friends, and releases by the likes of Etiop and Giro Arana, albeit somewhat difficult, prove that Jacek takes no compromises when it comes to individual artistic vision and quality.

Jacek Sienkiewicz, keeping far from current trends and fashions, definitely chose the hard path to follow: uncompromising, fusing slamming beats with the very own kind of melodic melancholy, is not an artist that is easy to pigeonhole. Even while collaborating with some like-minded friends, as recent EPs with Pier Bucci and Marcin Oz prove, he is clearly different. This, however, does not stop him from causing riotous reactions from the crowd – playing all over the world, from Cocoon parties in Ibiza, DEMF in Detroit, all the biggest festivals in Europe – to small, intimate gigs in underground clubs and bars, he always tends to surprise, mesmerise and finally rise the roof up high.

Eulberg’s music has often been inspired by nature, which makes sense for a former biology student whose past professions include forest park ranger. Diorama could be his earthiest album yet, which each track devoting itself to one of the 11 “wonders of domestic nature,” which Eulberg picked out with the help of German nature magazine NABU. Wonders that made the cut include bats, the bee orchid, the glow worm, the Icelandic cyperine, water and ants. Each of these gets its own blurb in the liner notes, explaining just what makes this particular wonder so great. “One ant alone is not capable of big achievements,” Eulberg writes. “But through the brilliant, self-organised state formed out of millions of ants, a collective intelligence comes into being.”

Small innovation today, as our 37th podcast mixed by Tim Green is delivered with an interview of the young English producer. This music globe-trotter has already been through many labels, from Dirtybird to Get Physical or Cocoon, with always the same success in the end. He nicely agreed to talk to us about his career, his projects and his influences in this interview, accompanied by an excellent set going from house to tech house, two hours mixed with perfect taste and technique. Perfect to dance till the “small hours of the morning”, as the title of the mix suggests it.

Hi Tim, can you introduce yourself briefly ?
Hi im Tim Green. A musician/producer from the UK.

When and how did you get into music production and DJing ?
About 4/5 years ago. I have always been a musician growing up, but got into producing and djing when I first heard electronic music. Daft Punk was what changed my life originally!

Fondation, Get Physical, Dirtybird, Cocoon, Trapez… While some artists release all their material on the same label, you’ve already released records on almost ten… Is it a choice or do you just take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to you ?
Yeah its always something I like to do. I enjoy being varied and trying new things musically. So releasing different types of tracks on different labels is appealing to me. So far Im always changing my sound and direction. So I don’t know if there would be 1 label that could possibly cater for everything. Maybe there is, but still, I like to work with different labels. Is always nice working with friends and their labels too. But im not planning on releasing on many other labels now. I think before I have been finding my feet a little musically.

You seem to be quite close to the Get Physical family now as you are often part of this label’s gigs… Are you considering settling down on this label ?
Yeah I really love Get Physical….. M.a.n.d.y., DJ T etc… and everyone who runs GP. Is a really nice family of people. Is definitely a label I want to really focus on. But honestly I don’t think ill ever settle for one label. Even if I had my own label, I would not settle on it. As I said before, I prefer to work with lots of different labels. To always keep things interesting and work with new people. But again, im not planning to release on many more labels in the future.

What’s your opinion on all the hype that is currently surrounding labels like Crosstown Rebels, Hot Creations, Wolf + Lamb, Visionquest etc..?
I think they are totally worth the hype! I love all the music these guys are doing. Really nice to have more musicality put back into underground music. Im always playing records from these labels. Plus all these guys have a great sense of humour and are really nice people. I think this comes across in the music also.

It’s been a while since your last release (apart from remixes)… Is there a specific reason for this ?
Haha, yeah there is a few reasons. Firstly I take a long time to finish music that I actually like and am happy with. Secondly, I have been touring a lot and adapting to this kind of lifestyle. Thirdly I have been working on my album also (which is not going to be a 4/4 dance album) whilst working on some new singles at the same time. So its all taking a bit longer, but mainly because im balancing a lot of things all at once.

You are mostly known for your DJing skills, but have you ever considered starting a live set ?
Yeah hopefully with the album its something I would like to perform in a live sense. But for me im hesitant to just do a live set with a laptop or something. I come from playing guitar in bands, working in professional studios recording jazz and folk growing up. So it would be great if I did it more from a band point of view, singing, playing guitars+keyboards etc… I think live music should be spontaneous, where musicians feed off each other, so its always different and new. But its something I will have to experiment with im sure.

What other projects do you have in the pipeline ?
The other focus at the moment is my night Bedlam. Which we (me and my manager) have been doing in Kent, south of england. Its been going so great! We have had previous guests like Cassy, Matthias Tanzmann, Audiofly, Lee Burridge, 2000 & one, M.a.n.d.y. and Martin Buttrich. We are also taking it london now, with our first party in March Headlined by Art Department!

Who are the DJs and producers that you like and that inspire you at the moment ?
Wow there are so many! I think my always favourite has to be Matthias Tanzmann. For his own productions, his label and especially his Djing. Other artists Im loving at the moment are Amir, Maceo Plex, Tanner Ross, Luca Albano, No One, Guti and SECT. These are just the ones I remember right now anyway haha.

You have played in Paris on the 11th of March for a Get Physical night with Siopis and Audiofly… What do you think of this city regarding its nightlife ?
Yeah I really like it! I have payed quite a few times now in Paris, in different places. They each have different crowds and vibes. I think you can never tell how it will turn out in Paris, so it can be unexpected. But vie always enjoyed it anyway.

Thanks Tim !

Patrice Bäumel is a German electronic musician who has been living in Amsterdam for the last 14 years. Before fully committing his life to making music, he had a carreer in teaching, computer programming and design…

Some people are collectors. They collect foto’s, books, records. They cherish the memories that are attached to these things, mentally re-living bygone days. The older and rarer an object is, the more valuable and fascinating it seems to them.
Patrice is not one of those people. No foto collection. Memory is baggage. No vinyl fetish. Tradition is limitation. Future, however, is a blank sheet of paper, waiting to be scribbled upon in the maddest colours imaginable. The excitement of the unknown is what motivates him to experiment and break free from the herd. Holy cows need to be slaughtered every now and then. Look closely and you will see blood on his hands.
Behind the decks or in the studio, Patrice tries to combine the uncombinable, mix contrasting elements, play with surprising dynamics. Man vs machine, warm vs cold. It is the reoccurring theme in his tracks, podcasts and dj sets.
Patrice has gained a rock solid reputation worldwide through his productions for labels like Get Physical (“Roar”), Trapez or Studio !K7. Remix work includes mixes for Booka Shade or Bomb The Bass. Together with Nuno Dos Santos he forms “360”, a cutting edge dj and production duo. Their monthly residency at Trouw is a wild display of new school electronic dance music. As a co-owner of the new Trouw label and booking agency, Patrice is involved in many aspects of today’s music business.

Other happening things: One of the album tracks is licensed to !K7 and will appear on the next DJ Kicks compilation done by Apparat. A spontaneous collaboration with Lee Jones lead to an interesting track that can be found on Lee’s upcoming Watergate mix cd. On top of that, there is a pretty outlandish remix for H.O.S.H.’s new album coming out on Diynamic. Last but not least Patrice will finally hit the road with his brand new live act, starting around the time of the album release.

5 All Time Favourite Records

Can – Future Days (Carl Craig’s Bladerunner Mix)
Underworld – Dubnobasswithmyheadman

Biography

Florian Meindl is an Austrian DJ, producer and sound designer. In addition to numerous collaborations with international artists he is busy with writing soundtracks for movies, advertisings, producing remixes (currently for Röyksopp & Hot Chip) and has just successfully completed his BA studies at the London College of Music. He also writes articles about music production in magazines like “FutureMusic” and does music production shows for the “Berlin Mitte Institut”. Till now his productions have been released on labels such as Trapez, Stil vor Talent, Resopal, Herzblut and Kling Klong. The 17th and current release on his own label FLASH Recordings is in production; this serves as a platform for continuous development and promises many unheard sound creations from Meindl’s universe.

If you ask the 24 year old musician about the origin of his exceptional career, he will describe it as an “early identification with electronic music” which occurred in a small village in beautiful Upper Austria.

However, Meindl still finds the time to present his original and unique sound branding to a curious party crowd which is rapidly developing into a loyal community of fans.

In addition to his continuous touring and label work he also produces a sound design in the form of audio samples under the name “Riemann Kollektion” which has already taken its place in the standards of modern musical development. When one experiences the modest authority of this sound artist in the sometimes slightly morbid and fast moving scenario of today’s club music, one can look forward to the continued development of electronic music. Florian Meindl is certainly one of the most interesting representatives of the next generation of electronic music producers.

Here is a little foretaste of what is awaiting tomorrow night, Saturday May 22nd, on the occasion of Airdrop’s come back to Love NYC! Sir Martin Eyerer is already in the country and will make serious damage in the City of Angels tonight at King King. Tomorrow, he will be announcing his new record on Airdrop, In My House, along with fellow remixers Crazy Larry,Punisher and Pat Fontes…

Martin Eyerer has been a DJ for 20 years – and just as many years a producer, label owner, radio show producer. Throw in his two young children and it seems that the energy never leaves his side. Martin Eyerer is not a laptop artist, but a true musician. His high-end studio meets the highest requirements and has become an interdisciplinary interface for mastering.

As an important platform for his music Martin Eyerer has founded his own labels – Kling Klong and Session Deluxe. Due to the conscientious release policy Martin Eyerer was able to establish an independent sound between electro, minimal and tech-house on Kling Klong and more housy and underground on Session Deluxe.

Whether collaborations, solo works, remixes or compilations, all his works appear almost monthly on dance-floor dominating labels, like Kling Klong, Systematic, Audiomatique, Great Stuff, Kickboxer… The most unbelievable aspect of this is the variety of styles Martin Eyererstands for. There is no segment from Deep House to Minimal Techno that the man is not in control of…

Born in Dublin, Ireland, raised gypsy style in southern Spain and constantly moving cities, Sian chose early to drop out of normal society, make music and DJ. Adhering more to the avantgarde way of life, he stands out as a little more bohemian than the average electronic figure.. a rare, flamboyant and eccentric new talent. As one of the most promising upcoming acts in the techno scene today, Sian revels in his uniqueness. He has already been reworked and remixed by talent like Gui Boratto, Steve Bug, Efdemin, Minilogue or Pan-Pot and so early on in his career, has toured half the world. Rocking heaving crowds and bringing his trademark experimental DJing style to the masses via multiple outputs of explosive techno, fx and loops cut up and edited live. His tracks instantly caught the ear of everyone from Sasha, John Digweed, Carl Cox to Luciano, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice or Steve Bug and have shown how a genre busting raw talent crosses over stylistic boundaries. Plus his DJing performances at international contemporary clubs and festivals in Europe, to dates in North and South America, Australia and beyond. Memorable nights at pioneering clubs like Berghain, Secretsundaze, Tripod, Weekend, Hive, Nitsa etc have seen Sians marathon DJ sets bring real voodoo to the dancefloor. With appearances on very select labels, his unusual DJing approach and his acclaimed output on his own techno imprint, Octopus, Sian is fast becoming recognized by peer and press alike as one to watch. From international radio like the BBC to Mags like DJMAG, IDJ, Mixmag, Raveline, XLR8, Groove, Resident Advisor etc the praise for his raw style and very exploratory label are unanimous. This young imprint is already getting praised by DJs like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Dubfire, Loco Dice, John Digweed, Damian Lazarus, M.A.N.D.Y. Whether conducting everlasting sweat soaked DJ sessions or creating timeless dance music, Sian is a truly diverse and original talent,at once chic and hedonistic, always intensely inventive… Still shaking from some huge slabs of dancefloor energy with Exercise One and Jonas Kopp remixes on his own label “Octopus”, Sian has been buried in the studio remixing for Bedrock, Trapez Records and is preparing 2 new releases for Soma.
He’s been all over DJing to frenzied mobs, running his own “Shake your bones” residency in Barcelona and is just about to start another USA tour.
Keep your eyes peeled for some serious techno workout action with his upcoming Oubliette EP, featured in this mix, with remixes from Norman Nodge and Staffan Linzatti.

Episode as we continue our tribute to Trapez’s 100th release with The incredibly talented; “deepchild” happy holidays and stay NOICE! DEEPCHILD BIO www.myspace.com/deepchile www.deepchild.com info@deepchild.com (Europe bookings) jon@breakoutaudio.co.uk (UK/Ireland bookings) sharon@kindredmgmt.com (Australia/Asia bookings) agents@symbiosisartists.com (USA/Canada bookings) Touring top billing dj set along-side the likes of Richie Hawtin and Green Velvet (at the massive EXIT Festival, Serbia) Jeff Mills (Tribal Sessions in Leeds), Jesse Rose, Dixon and Sebo K (for Jesse’s “Made to Play” monthly at Berlin’s legendary Panorama Bar), M.A.N.D.Y (Watergate, Berlin), Ewan Pearson and WIll Saul (SONAR, Barcelona) to remix work for techno superstars, Booka Shade (voted best act and best record label, Get Physical, in dance bible IDJ last year), there’s much that can be said for this genre-mashing producer. If the increasingly demanding international schedule of weren’t enough (try playing Germany and then Kuala Lumpur in the space of 4 days!), a string of highly successful 12″s on labels and remixes last year have well and truly solidified deepchild’s reputation as a serious ‘contender’ in the saturated international dance-music community. London, Berlin, Tokyo, California, Vancouver, Cologne, Manchester, Leeds, Serbia, Kuala Lumpur and more have all featurer in this years extensive dj/live touring menu, with residencies in homeland of Sydney (AU) at Bread and Butter and KINK fleshing out time between quarterly European tours and a busy studio schedule. When not turning the dials in his studio in Bondi, Sydney, deepchild bunkers down for extended production duties in his unofficial ‘second home’ of various studios in Berlin (where much of his label-community and European booker are based). From ‘big-label’ original releases for labels like US Om Records, remix work for legendary producers New Order, Booka Shade (Get Physical), deeper cuts for Trapez and Resopal Schallware, and serious tech-weapons for Anabatic, Affin (run by Kompakt’s Joakim Spieth), Dieb and Detroit’s own MDEX Records, a steady stream of bouncy, jackin’ minimal sounds have insured deepchild has remained one of Australia’s most in-demand producers. Hipp-e, Robert Babicz, Tigerstripes, Jimpster and Luomo have all leant their remix credits to deepchild 12″s…. The journey has been a long and sonically expansive one. Recent dj support from the likes of Justin Martin, Mattias Tanzman and Hipp-e, sits solidly against the proclamations of respected music journal, The Wire, who went as far as to proclaim that this sound was “as sexy and addictive as new-dub electronica gets”. From quirky, stripped-back techno to deep dub explorations, deepchild has proven a robust producer and highly repsected dj and live-performer. When Stereo-Heaven (the biggest dj store in Essen, Germany) found that their biggest selling tech-house record was infact written in a small share-house studio in Sydney’s Inner-West (deepchild’s “No Disgrace”, on Future Classic), they took the time to make special mention of what is indicative of deepchild’s head-turning appeal: “over here in my hometown in germany, we really love “no disgrace”!! it’s also by far the best selling record in our new local shop, too…from deep or tech house to minimal djs, hiphop and electronica fans – everybody is into that 3-tracker…really an amazing 12″ you’ve created!” Freerange Record’s ‘tech-house institution’, Milton Jackson, phrased is rather more sucsinctly, “Oh My God. I think you are my new hero”

about the artist:

Marcus Sur aka Marcus Frankowski started early discovering his passion for music. At the age of 14 he founded his own band, where he – first as singer, later as bass – inspired the audience in numerous concerts.

In the late 90s he exchanged the bass for 2 record players and started djing in some clubs in the Ruhr area. At this stage he didn’t want to commit to any music style. Bored by the stagnation in Hardcore and Crossover he quickly found a new home in the revolutionarily developing electronical music scene.

His design study led him to Essen where he soon got gigs in the legendary House club “Rote Liebe”. As resident DJ in the Essen club Baikonur he also used to be an essential musical consultant and trend scout.

In celebration of the Trapez 100 Release…. we are proud to present a 4 part series leading us through the new year. Today… please welcome back to NOICE! the Legendary Florian Meindl..

Florian Meindl is a DJ, producer and sound designer.

Florian Meindl is certainly one of the most interesting representatives of the next generation of electronic music producers.

as promised… here is a wonderful weekend mix by one fine DJ. Please welcome the ultra Talented Franklin De Costa.

His first releases was way back in 1996 on his own label Fusion Records (w/ 303 Nation Member, Patrick Vauillaume).
Under his Tichy moniker various EPs have been realeased on Frankfurt techno labels until at the end of the 90s. His search for inspiration brought him to a very experimental production phase without the „4 to the floor“ presetting. From this he developed his distinctive trademark sound with straight grooves and frisky sound design.
With the concentration on DJing and party organising Franklin began the extroverted phase of the studio nerd. In 2003 he started working with Yapacc and founded the Studiogemeinschaft project. Along with the infamous Frankfurt DJs Bo Irion and Miriam Schulte they started “The Green Empire” events in Frankfurt.

Meanwhile Franklin was gaining more international recognition with releases on well-known labels such as Trapez ltd, Karmarouge Noir, Einmaleins Musik and Treibstoff. His singles entered the charts of djs worldwide.
Over the last years his dj sets brought him an extensive gig schedule in many countrys from Russia to the US to Japan.
2008 he released on the Mobilee sublabel Leena Resopal Red and Curle. He started also a new project with Daso which was released on Outils Du Connaisseur April 2009. Expect also new material on Curle, Einmaleins Music and Auralism for 2009.

TRAPEZ should need no introduction on these pages. One of Cologne’s long standing and for that matter, outstanding techno imprints it’s been since 2000 when Jackie and Riley Reinhold were motivated by the urge to release DJ weapons through their experiences from running their illustrious TRAUM label to launch TRAPEZ.

They kicked things off with Anton Kubikov (of SCSI-9 fame) and from there the label has fortified the groundwork for some of today’s most important techno producers on the planet.Whether it be the first releases from AKUFEN to JACEK SIENKIEWICZ, ALEX UNDER, JEFF SAMUEL, STEVE BARNES, GABRIEL ANANDA….the list goes on with a heavyweight consistency of music that has kept countless dance floors filled from late nights that turn inevitably turn into days.

So we salute the label as they arrive on their landmark 100th release! Smartly celebrated in the form of two 12” releases and a CD album, TRAPEZ 100 serves up a of exclusive, unreleased tunes that perfectly remark the past and future of the label. We will be offering TRAPEZ 100 on KOMPAKT.FM this Monday the 14th September so stay tuned!

That said, to get you through the weekend in anticipation of TRAPEZ 100, one of the most talented and long standing producers on TRAPEZ, Düsseldorf’s OLIVER HACKE has come up with an outstanding DJ mix featuring UNRELEASED TRACKS that kindly thanks to TRAPEZ, we are able to offer exclusively on KOMPAKT.FM!
